Free Tools for Quickly Making City, Town, and Cave Maps for DnD

Creating DnD homebrew campaigns and custom one-shots can be incredibly rewarding as a DM.

Nothing beats watching your players have a blast in a totally unique world or custom-tailored dungeon that you created!

Of course, homebrewing for Dungeons and Dragons takes a lot of time and effort.

Our goal at Alchemy GameLab is to make that process easier – and we recently discovered a great tool to help: The Fantasy City Generator from Watabou.

With this user-friendly, browser-based tool, you can generate stunning, immersive maps in seconds. These tools are perfect for DMs who run games online using a VTT or even just over Zoom with screen sharing.

Easily customize the size, features, style, colors, and more to create maps that fit with your DnD campaign’s aesthetic.

Here are just a few examples of what you can create:

All of these maps took seconds to create and just a few minutes to customize.

And that’s not the only incredible free tool from Watabou. They also have a super-handy Neighborhood Map Generator.

Check these out!

But wait… there’s more! How about a Cave Generator!

And the cave map tool can also be used to create forest glades.

Need a quick dungeon for a one-shot? Just use the One-Page Dungeon Random Map Generator.

These maps look amazing and are completely procedurally generated using computer code, so you can generate an infinite number of unique towns, cities, neighborhoods, caves, and dungeons.

And that’s not even every tool! Be sure to check out All of Watabou’s Handy Tools for GMs.

Build and map an entire world for DnD

Now, if you’re really motivated to get into world-building an entirely new DnD setting for your campaign, there’s another incredible map-making tool you have to check out: The Azgaar Fantasy Map Generator.

This tool can not only generate random world maps but can also be used to create a completely custom world map with continents, biomes, land features, cities, and towns that you customize. Your imagination and creativity are the only limit.

You’ve got maps covered. Now what?

Maps are great, but you’ll need a lot of monsters, items, obstacles, NPCs, and more to put inside of your maps.

And that’s also a lot of work to flesh out.

Luckily, our Homebrewer’s Helper for Dungeon Masters has you covered with tons of handy random tables.

We have random tables for monsters by CR, magic items, mundane items, cursed items, locations, weather… you name it.

Happy brewing!
